We were initially stationed 2 CONT at San Bruno, CA (formerly a race track), and departed 20 Dec 1944 from 2 CONT San Francisco for Guam on the transport ship USS General E T Collins. We 2 CONT docked for 3 days at Pearl Harbor, and spent 6 days at anchor in the 2 CONT Marshall Islands (Eniwetok, etc.) Leaving the Marshalls, our convoy 2 CONT consisted of 9 freighters and transports plus 2 sub-chaser escorts. We 2 CONT arrived in Guam 17 Jan 1945. From the text: "Before dropping anchor off 2 CONT treeless Eniwetok sleeping aboard the Collins was still practically 2 CONT impossible. By now the heat and stench in each compartment was almost 2 CONT unbearable. Devious, dubious and drastic maneuvers were engineered by all 2 CONT hands in an effort to locate even a seat in which to catch a few winks of 2 CONT much needed slumber. Night sleeping on deck was strictly forbidden. 2 CONT Those who tried it were unceremoniously driven below." In fact, a buddy 2 CONT of mine named Garrett (Fred, I think) and I tried sleeping in a lifeboat. 2 CONT We were caught by the officer of the deck and told that to do this in time 2 CONT of war was a capital offense, but that they weren't going to turn us in 2 CONT because the captain of our ship was a little off in the head. Among other 2 CONT things, he currently had a court martial pending for running into a 2 CONT fishing ship in San Francisco harbor which had the right of way. One 2 CONT early evening, when it was still light, the announcement was made that 2 CONT "the smoking lamp is out," which meant no smoking on deck (for fear of 2 CONT making us known to submarines). Somebody absent-mindedly lit a cigarette 2 CONT on deck, and the captain hollered to the seaman watch on the bridge (who 2 CONT had a rifle), "Shoot that man." Fortunately, the seaman guard was so 2 CONT flabbergasted he didn't react, and the poor fellow who had lit the 2 CONT cigarette ran below and became anonymous in the crowd. This yearbook 2 CONT contains pictures of the pure jungle in which we started to build the 2 CONT hospital, various stages of construction and finished items, and also two 2 CONT pictures of me, one as a hospital corpsman on Ward 5A (General Medicine, 2 CONT internal), and one as member of the TPR staff. The TPR (= temperatire, 2 CONT pulse, respiration---standard medical abbreviation) was a *daily* 2 CONT newsletter, run by James Workman, and put out chiefly by him and me, 2 CONT although there were 12 or so "reporters" from various parts of the base. 2 CONT Workman had been a clerk of some sort in the state legislature of 2 CONT Missouri, and I especially remember him suddenly exclaiming about 2 hours 2 CONT after we heard of the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt: "My God, Harry is 2 CONT president!" (Harry Truman, of course.) 2 CONT 2 CONT * * * * * * * * 2 CONT 2 CONT About my service in the U S Army: From Army Separation Qualification 2 CONT Record: "RADIO OPERATOR. HIGH SPEED, MANUAL (766). Last served with 2 CONT Alaska Comm System in Alaska. Operated teletype and was assistant cashier 2 CONT at Adak, Alaska [Aleutian Islands]. Operated CW, phones, and teletype at 2 CONT Juneau, Alaska. Was cashier and teletype operator at Cold Bay, Alaska 2 CONT [tip of Alaska peninsula, where Aleutian islands begin]. Was operator and 2 CONT transmitter attendant at Anchorage, Alaska." (Dates of service in Army 2 CONT were 5 Apr 1947 to 13 Sep 1949). 2 CONT 2 CONT Here is an article I wrote for publication is some ACS (Alaska 2 CONT Communcation System) periodical when I was about 23 years old: "You may 2 CONT as well face it--you are now at Thornbrough AFB, 650 long air miles from 2 CONT Anchorage, Alaska. The base is situated on the western shore of Cold Bay 2 CONT (pronounced Cold Bay), a body of water roughly five by eleven miles in 2 CONT size. It (Cold Bay, not the base) wmpties into an etymologically 2 CONT unfaithful Pacific on the south, and it is bounded on the other three 2 CONT sides by towering mountains, eructivating volcanoes, dismal tundra-covered 2 CONT hills, and several rows of empty beer cases. (P) The geographical 2 CONT descriptions which follow have been lifted bodily from a report written by 2 CONT a former inhabitant of this region who is now happily ensconced in the ZI 2 CONT [Zone of the Interior] or some similar paradise. So, if the facts are in 2 CONT error, don't blame *me*. (P) I shall also appropriate my earnest 2 CONT informer's locus operandi (a Latin phrase meaning, "out of many, one") In 2 CONT order that the unsuspecting visitor or the pitiable newcomer may be 2 CONT oriented before beginning his seach for Cold Bay's evidences of nature's 2 CONT handicaps, we select as a point of reference the main runway. (P) If you 2 CONT stand on the runway, facing the tower, you will be looking into the 2 CONT northeast, and probably into the face of an irate tower operator who will 2 CONT tell you to get the hell off the runway. If you do an about face, turning 2 CONT your back on this unaesthetic person, you will be facing Cold Bay's claim 2 CONT to scenic fame--the inactive volcano, Mt. Frosty (pronounced Cold Bay), 2 CONT altitude 5820 feet, distance, approximately 7 1/2 miles. (P) To the right 2 CONT of Frosty, some distance to the rear, is small Mt. Simeon (pronounced 2 CONT Seattle). During favorable weather (last year the favorable weather came 2 CONT on a Wednesday), the saddle connecting Frosty and Simeon frames the 2 CONT Shishaldin volcano (pronounced Times Square), the so-called King of 2 CONT Aleutian volcanoes, which rises to a towering 9978 feet. [I forgot to 2 CONT mention it's active.] It is located some 60 miles from Cold Bay on Unimak 2 CONT Island (pronounced Rssycmck), which is separated from the Alaskan 2 CONT peninsula by Isanotski Strait, commonly called False Pass by people who 2 CONT can't pronounce Isanotski (pronounced Isanotski). (P) Within the saddle 2 CONT and slightly to tghe left of Shishaldin is another volcano of a serrate 2 CONT rather than conical appearance. It labors under the title, Mt. Isanotski 2 CONT (Mama Isanotski was notoriously fecund), but has been re-named by the same 2 CONT linguistic laggards, "Ragged Jack". (P) If you now turn your head to the 2 CONT extreme right until a distinct crick is felt in the back of the neck, you 2 CONT will be dubiously rewarded with a view of Mt. Amak (pronounced any way you 2 CONT damn well please), which rises from the sea like a second lieutenant's 2 CONT wrath, without benefit of surrounding island. (P) We now request that you 2 CONT re-adjust your no-doubt aching neck, do another about face, ignore the 2 CONT wildly gesturing tower operator, and look into the distance to the right 2 CONT of the tower. If your bifocals have been cleaned recently, you will be 2 CONT able to observe the active volcano, Mt. Pavlov (pronounced Stalin), which 2 CONT has been called by people who should know better, "the crowning glory of 2 CONT the Cold Bay region". This volcano has an altitude of 8900 feet, and 2 CONT boasts a 50 square mile glacier plus several small ice fields of no 2 CONT apparent use to anyone. To the left of Pavlov is Cathedral Agglomerate, 2 CONT so named, oddly enough, because its notched pinnacles bear some 2 CONT resemblance to the towers of a cathedral. It has been said that this 2 CONT formation is actually a group of Aghileen pinnacles formed during the late 2 CONT Tertiary age, but, not being one to pick up *every* piece of gossip that 2 CONT comes along, I don't put much faith in the statement. (P) Fossils of 2 CONT trees, plants, and well-thumbed comic books have been found in the area, 2 CONT indicating, according to the people who know what such things indicate, 2 CONT that the area was once heavily vegetated. However, sinvce early Tertiary 2 CONT time, volcanic action and certain members of the military, whose names I 2 CONT withhold at the request of the next of kin, have vastly changed the 2 CONT topography. In some areas, over 4000 feet of volcano detritus, as well as 2 CONT some two feet of empty beer cans and worn-out GI boots, cover the fossil 2 CONT remains. (P) Of more recent origin than the fossils are the many fish 2 CONT which abound during the summer in Russell and Frowsty creeks. (Of course, 2 CONT after a few of these fish have been laying on the bank a few days, you may 2 CONT *wish* they were fossils, but that is neither here nor there.) Varieties 2 CONT included are: Rainbow and Dolly Varden trout, and Humpback or Pink, Red, 2 CONT Silver Dog, and King Salmon. Fox, wolf, brown bear, and land otter also 2 CONT inhabit the outlying regions. (P) During the spring and summer, the flora 2 CONT include the lupine, anemone, violet, fireweed, monkshood, orchid, 2 CONT buttercup, azalea, geranium, primrose, and daisy. Also prevalent during 2 CONT these seasons are several species of berry: wild strawberry, cranberry, 2 CONT and salmon berry. The raspberry is prevalent during all seasons. (P) In 2 CONT conclusion, I would like to quote a scintillating opinion of Cold Bay 2 CONT voiced by a certain Pfc who, at the time this descriptive jewel was 2 CONT uttered, had spent over 12 months in our glorious region. Looking out 2 CONT across the tumbling hills to the snow-tipped mountains beyond, he took a 2 CONT deep breath, sighed, and said with humble grace: "I wanna go home!" Like a rare jewel ever undimmed her bright spirit 2 CONT gave light and cheer to all about her. With an amazing power of will 2 CONT which nothing seemed able to subdue she devoted herself to the happiness 2 CONT and welfare of others. Complete self-forgetfulness lifted her above what 2 CONT her own feelings and wishes might seem to justify. Her never failing 2 CONT faith and buoyance kept herself and others from depression. [Footnote: Authorities on 2 CONT the Wolcott family are *The Wolcott Memorial* and Stiles's *History of 2 CONT Windsor*.] He removed to New England with his wife and several children, 2 CONT in March, 1630. He was one of the first twenty-four freemen of 2 CONT Dorchester, Mass., and received grants of land there as early as April, 2 CONT 1633, and probably before; and was Selectman in 1634. He was one of those 2 CONT most interested in the Connecticut settlement, and removed to Windsor in 2 CONT 1636, as one of the original proprietors. In the year following he took 2 CONT an active part in the earliest legistlative proceedings of the new Colony; 2 CONT was elected a Magistrate in 1643, and continued to hold this office until 2 CONT his death, May 30, 1655. Mr. Stiles, the historian of Windsor, says of 2 CONT him:--- "He was probably, after the pastor, the most distinguished man in 2 CONT Windsor." (P) In speaking of the life and public services of Henry 2 CONT Wolcott, Mr. Hollister, in his *History of Connecticut*, says:--- "In the 2 CONT 78th year of his age, but with a judgment unclouded, and his usefulness 2 CONT unimpaired, the venerable Henry Wolcott, one of the principal magistrates 2 CONT and advisers of the colony, quickly followed his comrade (Haynes) to the 2 CONT grave. I cannot help making a brief mention of him, and yet were I to 2 CONT speak at any considerable length of all the bright examples of patriotism 2 CONT and exalted worth that have borne the name of Wolcott in Connecticut, I 2 CONT should find this work extending itself beyond the limits that I have 2 CONT marked out for it." (P) "Henry Wolcott, Esquire, ther ancestor of all the 2 CONT Wolcotts of this State, was of a very ancient family, and the owner of a 2 CONT large estate in Somersetshire. He was born in Tolland, on the 6th of 2 CONT December, 1578, and was the son and heir of John Wolcott of Galdon Manor. 2 CONT The manor-house is still standing, and is of very great antiquity and 2 CONT extent. It was originally a splendid mansion, designed as well for the 2 CONT purposes of defense against the excesses of a lawless age, as for a 2 CONT permanent family residence. It is still richly ornamented with carved 2 CONT work, and if left to itself unassailed by the hand of violence, it will 2 CONT stand for ages. The familiar motto of the family arms, borrowed from the 2 CONT Roman poet, is still to be seen upon the walls of the manor-house, its 2 CONT bold words informing us that the family who have adopted it as their text 2 CONT of life were "accustomed to swear in the words of no master." It is alike 2 CONT in keeping with the independent spirit of an English gentleman of the 2 CONT middle ages, and with that of a Puritan of the 17th century who spurned 2 CONT the dictation of ecclesiastical dominion." (P) "In his early life Henry 2 CONT Wolcott lived after the manner of the landed gentry, at an era when the 2 CONT term "country squire" was synonymous with whatever was bold, athletic, and 2 CONT hardy in the steeplechasing, hospitable days of "merry England." But as 2 CONT the years stole on, and the principles of the Reformation, making little 2 CONT progress at first, began to invade not only the wrestling-ring of the 2 CONT yeoman and the counting-room of the merchant, but the hall of the 2 CONT county-gentleman, Wolcott, among others, was led to direct his thoughts to 2 CONT more serious topics than the pastimes that had engrossed his earlier 2 CONT manhood. While meditations respecting a future state of being occupied 2 CONT his mind, a religious teacher, Mr. Edward Elton, became his guide, and led 2 CONT him to that clear understanding of the doctrines of Christianity, and 2 CONT those firm convictions of its truth, that remained with him to the day of 2 CONT his death. Of an ardent temperament and lively sensibilities, and seeing 2 CONT that much needed to be reformed in the severities practiced upon so many 2 CONT of the best subjects of the realm, he soon became identified with the 2 CONT Puritan party, sold a large estate in lands, including the manor-house, 2 CONT for which he received about eight thousand pounds sterling, probably much 2 CONT less than its value, and made preparations to spend the remainder of his 2 CONT days in America. In 1628 he visited New England to examine the country, 2 CONT and returned. His sympathetic nature could not fail to attach itself 2 CONT inseparably to the self-accusing, though charitable, Wareham, and he 2 CONT sailed with him for the new world in the same ship, and arrived in 2 CONT Massachusetts in May, 1630. Roger Ludlow was of the same party. Wolcott 2 CONT remained in Dorcherster until 1636, when he removed to Windsor upon the 2 CONT Connecticut river. He was, as most of our best inhabitants were, a 2 CONT planter, and was the principal one in Windsor. He was a member of the 2 CONT General Court of Connecticut in 1639." (P) "In 1643 he was chosen into 2 CONT the magistract, and continued to be one of its most safe and immovable 2 CONT pillars till his death in 1655. His monument of imperishable sandstone, 2 CONT built by the same hands that fashioned the one that stands over the 2 CONT Fenwick tomb at Saybrook, has always been a shrine to tempt towards it the 2 CONT feet of his numerous descendants, who have piously guarded it and lovingly 2 CONT adorned it for two hundred years. Time has spared, and the gray moss not 2 CONT obliterated, the quaint and simple epitaph, whose plain lettering tells us 2 CONT that it is the resting place of "Henry Wolcott, some time a magistrate of 2 CONT this jurisdiction." 2 CONT --- William F.
